"We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream," said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, in a release from the end of 2016 outlining the company's global electrification strategy. "We are confident that by 2020, 10% of Volvo’s global sales will be electrified cars."
According to the release, the plan includes introducing more plug-in hybrids across their product line. The company also says it will develop a new range of smaller electric cars and build an all-electric car for sale by 2019.
The first part of the strategy involves the introduction of plug-in hybrid versions of its 90 Series and 60 Series cars and SUVs with all wheel drive. The Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) used in these cars is a modular chassis system that uses a Volvo four-cylinder engine and is designed to easily accommodate the company’s preferred Haldex AWD system and the larger battery packs and electric motors required for plug-in hybrids. The platform allows the manufacturer to more easily replace individual components to make a vehicle meet market needs.
The XC90 T8 plug-in SUV is the first vehicle to use SPA. The all-new flagship sedan, the S90, is scheduled to have a T8 plug-in variant available by the end of 2016.
The Swedish car maker will also broaden the range of plug-in hybrid cars it offers with the introduction of a new front-wheel drive Twin Engine variant.
Volvo is also planning an entirely new range of smaller 40 Series cars based on its newly-developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which, like SPA, has been designed from the outset for electrification.
Lastly, the automaker says it will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019.
