Virginia Tech is one of 15 universities across North America competing in the EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future advanced vehicle competition series sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The goal of this competition is to re-engineer a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu to be more fuel efficient while maintaining performance, consumer acceptability and safety. Now in the third and final year of the competition, Virginia Tech has developed a series-parallel plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle affectionately named Mary the Malibu. She uses an engine, two electric motors and a high voltage battery system to operate efficiently with low impact to the environment.

The Year 3 Final Competition will be held in Milford, Michigan, for vehicle testing and Washington, D.C., for final presentations.
