With almost 15 years of product development, Segway continues to improve their self-balancing transporter. A simplified handle removal procedure makes removing it easier than on previous models. Unscrew two bolts and the handle detaches for storage or transportation. The streamlined foot bed features a charging plug port that has been beefed up, recessed a little and given a sturdier cover that closes when not in use.
The i2 SE is the commuter model designed to be used on sidewalks and indoors and features a 24-mile range. Its smaller footprint allows it to easily pass through standard door ways. The X2 SE model is optimized for outdoor use and has larger wheels and knobby tires, which increased stability and traction making it work well on light off road terrain like nature trails and walking paths.
The self-balancing feature of the Segway is a remarkable feat of engineering that makes the personal transporter feel incredibly solid. Using gyroscopes, accelerometers, and angle sensors, it balances the rider by applying forces to the ground in the direction of the lean. It's intuitive and simple. Riding, or “gliding,” feels like riding a live creature as it responds to your subtle weight shifts.
One of the obstacles keeping the Segway from attaining wider appeal is its price. Segway was recently acquired by the Chinese manufacturer Ninebot Limited. The company made products that competed directly with Segway and the two companies were engaged in a patent battle, but this acquisition may indicate lower priced models may be available in the future.
Segway has introduced several improvements to the SE, or second edition, models that enhance usability.
The X2 can handle terrain from a construction site or manufacturing campus to a nature trail or RV park. The stability offered by the x2 SE’s wide platform and deep-tread tires can handle the challenge. The X2 can trek through the dirt, take on gravel roads, charge through high grass and sand and shred trails. The x2 SE’s 8 inches of ground clearance affords you unrivaled access to wide open spaces. The x2 SE has the power and performance to let you play while you work — wherever you are.
The newest personal transporter uses five micro-machined angular rate sensors (gyroscopes) and two accelerometers that sense the angle of the PT with respect to gravity. The sensors take readings at 100 times per second to use the gyroscopes to self-balance the vehicle.
The PT senses the lean of the rider. Lean forward, backward, left or right and you go in that direction.
Segway Personal Transporters are refined vehicles that should appeal to consumers who understand that one-of-a-kind technology comes at a price. The company offers a wide selection of accessories adding to functionality. Consumers interested in buying a top-of-the-line electric bike may want to consider a test ride of an i2 SE and X2 SE.
